CDRSS Information Guide

  • What is the CDRSS Information Guide?

The CDRSS Information Guide is an indexed, searchable guide to everything you want to know about the Communicable Disease Reporting and Surveillance System (CDRSS), including: what it is, who can use it, what diseases can and cannot be reported in it, how to get training on it, its access requirements, who to contact for help and anything else you need to know about accessing, using or understanding the system.

  • CDRSS Home Page(s) Links

There are two websites for the CDRSS. One is the live reporting website where real data is reported. It is known as the production site. The other site is a training site where users can practice entering dummy data in a system that looks and functions like the production site.

  • FAQs Re What CDRSS Is and Who Can Use It

    1. The Communicable Disease Reporting and Surveillance System (CDRSS)
New Jersey has developed an electronic, web-enabled system where public health partners statewide can instantly report and track incidences of communicable diseases. The Communicable Disease Reporting and Surveillance System (CDRSS) facilitates the timely reporting and immediate sharing of pertinent data, thus supporting appropriate public health responses, be they isolated incidences or multi-state outbreaks. Direct line feeds from commercial laboratories and acute care hospitals electronically load laboratory results into the system overnight, while the manual keying in of information takes place on a daily basis as hundreds of trained users enter data. The CDRSS is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and weekly transmissions to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) support national as well as statewide surveillance.

    2. How Do I Access the CDRSS?
All you need to access the web-enabled CDRSS is Internet access to the Web. You will need to use Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher as your browser. You will require a DSL or T1 line; dial up is not quick enough to support access to the system. All necessary software is loaded on the CDRSS website; no software has to be purchased and loaded locally.

    3. How Secure Are the Data in the CDRSS?
The CDRSS has been developed in compliance with the CDC’s Public Health Information Network (PHIN) and National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) requirements using standardized Health Level 7 (HL7) language. Built using a secure socket layer on a three-tier system behind multiple firewalls and protected by unique user names and passwords, the CDRSS imposes viewing privileges restrictions which further limit users’ access to information to a “need-to-know” basis.

    4. Who Can Access the CDRSS?
Only those who have attended an NJ DHSS CDRSS training, signed a confidentiality agreement and are currently employed in a public health occupation, be that professional or supportive in nature, will be granted access to the CDRSS.

    5. Who is Using the CDRSS and How Widespread is its Coverage?
The CDRSS has a widely diversified user base. It is currently being used by: Local Health Department personnel, Infection Control Professionals (ICPs), Public Health Nurses (PHRNs), Microbiologists, Public Health Environmental Laboratories (PHEL), Health Officers (HOs), Registered Environmental Health Specialists (REHS), Public Health Educators (PHEs), Nurses, Epidemiologists (EPIs), Administrative Support, Local Information Network Communications System (LINCS) EPIs,  Clerical Staff, Laboratory Technicians, Managers, Planners, Directors, Physicians, Field Representatives, Analysts, as well as Department of Health and Senior Services, Communicable Disease Service (DHSS CDS) personnel.

CDRSS coverage extends to all 566 municipalities in 21 counties under 114 local health departments which include the 22 LINCS sites. It also covers the 83 acute care hospitals.

    6. How Do I Become a CDRSS User?
Send an e-mail to CDRSADMIN@doh.state.nj.us or call 609-631-4744 to request training. You can be trained on-site by one of your CDRSS-trained colleagues or you can come to Quakerbridge Plaza in Mercerville which is near Trenton, NJ and be trained by DHSS staff. All training is hands-on. If there is a group of people at one site or in one general area interested in becoming users, and individual computer terminals are available for each person at a mutually accessible site, a local training session can also be arranged.
