Influenza, or the flu, is a viral infection of the respiratory system. Adults and children with asthma are more likely to have medical complications from the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that people with asthma, who are at least 6 months old, receive a flu vaccination each year.
According to the 2005-2007 New Jersey Behavioral Risk Factor Survey (NJBRFS), the estimated annual percent of adults with asthma who are immunized for the flu is only about 39% falling well below the national target rate of 60% for adults with high risk conditions. Likewise, national data from the 2005-2006 flu season shows that the annual percent of children (2 – 17 years) with asthma who receive the flu vaccine is only about 29%. These figures highlight the need to increase flu vaccination among New Jersey residents with asthma.
