Technical Notes
Population definition. In all tables, mortality events and the birth population at risk are restricted to deliveries (live births and/or fetal deaths) that occurred in the calendar years 2000 through 2003, to mothers who resided in New Jersey at the time of delivery. Infant deaths must also have occurred while the mother was a legal resident of New Jersey.
Race and Hispanic origin of the mother. Hispanic refers to affirmative self-report of Hispanic ethnicity, regardless of race. All other race categories are exclusive of reported Hispanic ethnicity, and also based on self-report.
County and Municipal residence. This always refers to the legal residence of the mother at delivery. The full mailing address and self-reported county of residence reported on the birth certificate are geocoded to resolve discrepancies between postal territories and actual municipal jurisdictions.
