Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs)

Hospital-by-hospital performance on selected Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs) is now included in New Jersey's annual Hospital Performance Report as a result of 2009 legislation requiring publication of PSI data. Patient safety information in the Hospital Performance Report is a brief summary of the more detailed, supplemental report, Patient Safety Indicators -- Technical Report.

The report on PSIs gives health professionals, policy makers and consumers one more tool they can use in making important health care decisions. The report includes background information on the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Quality Indicators, how they are used to compare hospital performance, guides on interpreting PSI estimates, and detailed definitions of the inpatient quality indicators selected for public reporting.

Release of this report is consistent with the Department’s effort to advance health care quality improvement through public reporting on hospital quality performance.
